Pinterest Project: DIY Chalkboard

I’ve been throwing around the idea of a Pinterest Project of the Week post. This week I decided I wanted to tackle the chalkboard. Since we remolded the kitchen we were left with a big empty wall above the desk area. I knew a chalkboard would be perfect for this spot and I’ve been pinned several different ideas for inspiration.
I am in love with the way it turned out, take a look at the finished project…
Want to make one for your house?
I took pictures of the whole process from start to finish. We started and finished last night. When I say we I mainly mean Allen (Hey, someone has to watch B). Start out with a piece of plywood cut to the size you need. I needed a large one to fill the space above the desk in our kitchen. Then,  measure and cut the trim to go around the edges. There are so many different choices of trim at the hardware store, but this was a piece Allen had in his shop.
It’s important to label the pieces for an easy fit when you’re putting it all back together.

After the trim pieces are measured and cut check the wood for any “bad” spots. The wood needs to be smooth since you’ll be writing on it with the chalk.

While the wood putty is drying you can go ahead and paint the trim pieces. We used the leftover trim paint from the kitchen.

Once the wood putty is dry then you can sand it smooth.

When the surface is smooth and clean its time for the first coat of chalkboard paint.

It’ll take several coats of chalkboard paint, we used three. Allen also sanded the paint in between coats to make it smooth.

Once the chalkboard paint and the trim pieces are dry its time to put everything together.

To avoid nail holes use caulk to attach the trim pieces. Also, caulk the corners where the trim meets.

Drill holes on the back and screw short screws through the plywood and trim to ensure extra durability.

Add a screw to the corners…

Then, put lattice board around the edges to frame the trim and plywood. Once everything is attached securely touch up the paint on the trim. We gave it a second coat for good measure.

Here it is, hanging in the kitchen!! I love the way it turned out…

Note: Allen loves a good project and has tons of extra wood in his shop. The only things we had to purchase for this project was the chalkboard paint and the lattice board.
You could also purchase a picture frame and paint the edges the color of you choice and turn the center into a chalkboard using chalkboard paint.

So tell me, is there something on Pinterest you’ve recreated?
