There’s something different about this time of the year. I don’t know what’s in the air but something about the holidays makes everything a little better. People become more generous, their hearts a little kinder and even if its just for a few months I think the level of happiness increases slightly amongst the general population.
I always hear people say “you should be thankful all of the time, not just at Thanksgiving” and you should. We all should, without a doubt, be thankful every single day for all of the wonderful things that we have. But at the same time Thanksgiving is here to remind us of what we are thankful for. I know I need to work harder to really thank God for all of the blessings in my life each and every day and I can’t think of a better time to start than right now.
I’ve made my final trip to the grocery store for the things I plan to make for Thanksgiving. I’ve been busy cleaning the house today while Christmas music plays and the smell of cookies fills the air in our house. I can’t help but smile a huge smile when I think that the holidays are here, at last.
And for me, they’ll be even sweeter this year. I have a little girl napping away in the next room who will be so happy to see everyone on Thursday. Her face will light up at so many of her favorite people gathered in one place. She’ll be able to eat all of our favorite Thanksgiving foods and sneak a few bites of pumpkin pie. I’ll let her watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade while I cook our Thanksgiving favorites on Thursday morning.
What else could I ask for? That last paragraph alone is full of things to be thankful about. I never want to get so caught up in other things that I forget the significance of just being together.
So for this Thanksgiving holiday I’m going to turn my phone off and shut the lap top. Put the iPad away and not even think about the my to-do list. The only thing that will be on our television is the parade and holiday movies. After all, these are the days we’ll always remember, surrounded by friends and family, creating traditions and making memories.

It’s so true – just being together and having a meal is so much more than many people have. Seems amazing to believe, but there is no blessing too small to be thankful for!
